I interpreted his statement to mean "by learning how to use
the command-line available commands for getting my work done,
I have put a collection of tools under my belt which have stood
the test of time", but that "trying to do things using GUI
oriented programs results in having to learn how to do it
all over again with the next program." IOW, using GNOME is
not the same as using KDE; using MicroSoft Word is not the
same as using Frame is not the same as using Open Office;
etc.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong :-)

[I wonder what mail reader he uses? I guess mail rather than
Thunderbird, and browses the web using wget or the like. :)]
