Boot failure: /var/lock/subsys and / itself is read-only

Sounds like the filesystem may be in need of an fsck.  Boot into the
rescue environment by inserting CD1 of the install media and typing

linux rescue

once it comes up determine the device and partition with the root
filesystem and fsck it.
