how is initial xorg.conf generated? any options for this?

there is a tool system-config-display which gets your video card detected and 
lets you choose the video modes to be set up by default.

if you're interested in technical details, run diff after running 
system-config-display and you will notice one little change which makes the 
selected mode run by default.

xorg.conf can also be generated by running Xorg -configure.
