That was the point of IMAP when it was invented long ago.  The
point of gmail is to display ads targeted to you while you
use their web interface.

If you don't like using the web interface, you can configure
gmail to allow pop access - and it can still retain a copy
so even if you delete as you read the downloaded version
you can still go back and search with the web interface.
