Upgrading RH8 to FC3

Yes - but given that it is RH8 it is probably a good idea anyway,  
especially if he wants to use LVM.

There is a difference - RH8 can not fsck a FC3 ext3 partition (without  
updating the fsck tools anyway), I don't know what the difference is,  
but there clearly is one.

Backing it up is also a good idea even if he does wish to keep the same / 
home
