Seems I spoke too soon :-)

Update:

Sometimes it's immidiate, and sometimes it takes as long as from the 
menu. The strace shows that is stops at:
connect(16, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(16001), 
sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}, 16

When the dialog *does* show up, the same line says:
connect(16, {sa_family=AF_INET, sin_port=htons(16001), 
sin_addr=inet_addr("127.0.0.1")}, 16) = -1 ETIMEDOUT (Connection timed out)
