What's the output of the following commands:

$ /usr/sbin/chkfontpath --list
$ rpm -q fonts-xorg-base

On my machine, the "fixed" font is defined in 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias to be an alias of 
"-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1". Do 
you have an entry for "fixed" in 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias? Is 
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc listed as one of the directories in the 
output of "chkfontpath --list"?
