printer stopped working

Help!

My locally-connected HP LJ2100 no longer works. Nothing prints, but no 
error messages occur either. I deleted the printer, but CUPS no longer 
seems to recognize the parallel ports.

dmesg | grep lp

gives:

lp: driver loaded but no devices found
