Fine. Pop in CD-1 and do the install (you don't need floppy for
anything)

Well you are mislead. The thing that controls APM/ACPI is the kernel
boot option 'acpi=off' in /etc/grub.conf. Just manually edit this file
after installing the correct kernel - and then reboot.
