Problem with "startx"

Have you ever run in graphical mode from boot-up?
startx looks for files created in your home directory that are automatically 
placed there by some of the level 5 scripts the first time you boot up in 
graphical mode and log in.
Try
#startkde
or
#startgnome
instead.
