One would assume that the "advanced user" that would prefer fdisk would be
familiar with the process.

Ctrl-Alt-Fx seems to work in both cases for me.

As a side note, it appears that fdisk isn't even the preferred text based
tool.  Whereas the older manuals suggest using it for removing Red Hat
partitions, the newer manuals give the procedure with parted.
