Kernel update forces use of ide=nodma

Using kernel 2.6.9-1.681_FC3 boots up fine. Upgrading to all versions above
(724,737,741) caused a kernel panic. Forcing boot with ide=nodma option
works with these versions. However that is really slow

Using hdparm -d1 on the hard drives cause messages like this in dmesg. and
occasional system lock ups. Kernel version 681 does not have any such
messages in the log or lock up and IO ofcourse is significantly faster.

I am using yum for updating the kernels from the usual repositories
