grub-install failure

I have seen that error only last week and found out the
answer. Forget about grub-install and do the same thing as follows:
grub  
grub> root (hd0,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

Obviously you would change the hd0 and hd0,0 references to fit your
system.
