you prolly got the yum update daemon running, check back with:

chkconfig --list

and disable it, that should solve the problem with the auto updates.

on the other hand, kernels are released for a reason, so you prolly
better wanna fix the problem with the kernel, than disabling something
as vital as the auto update function.

in case you want help with your kernel error, please provide us with the
dmesg output of that box...
