VCD in drive locks the box

Thanks again,
While installing 2.6.12, I must have used rpm -Uvh so old one is removed.
I have handelled /etc/grub.conf well, so no issues there (3 boot, 2 hdd and
like that).
I will try as suggested and also before that rpm -ivh --force --test
kernelfilename.rpm to see the intelligent part of rpm command (it should
alarm me). My fedora box is without net connection (internel modem sm56
problem) so I cannot use yum. I get everything manually downloaded on other
box.
If I just put 2.6.11 vmlinuz and related init....file in root and edit
/etc/grub.conf suitably will it work? I mean is there no record in the
system about what lies in /boot ? I will try to find this by rpm -q
kernel-2.6.11 <exact-packagename-here.
