Nothing different there then.

I am still a tad unclear on the upgrade
the boot loader step. Does it effectively do an initial...

Probably.

The kernel postinst script runs before the bootloader is updated (that's one of the last things anaconda does IIRC). The kernel postinst script does not run grub at all, because it doesn't need to.
