Hi

You say you are using Fedora Core 3 but when I installed it, it did not have 
SATA support out of the box.

I installed Heidelberg on an IDE disk, compiled a kernel with SATA support 
enabled before it would reckognize my SATA.  (with Intel controller btw)

Asside from that, you could try to insert your first cd, boot from it, and 
start rescue mode.  It will mount your root filesystem (if it can) and then 
you will be able to access the logfiles.
