hm.. I can cut and paste from console displaying to to another console (both 
using xterm) but not to my mail client. 

You can do this:
top -n 1 > top_output.txt

The top_output.txt will have one snapshot of top, which you should be able to 
insert to your mail. 'man top' for more detail.
