Assuming you have a cable/dsl connection on of the easiest/cheapest
things you can do to secure your system is to get one of those dedicated
NAT/routers/firewalls put out by Linksys or Netgear.  While you can
configure a linux system to do the same thing these cheap boxes require
very little if any care and feeding once setup.  They are designed for
one thing and do it very well.

Disable all unused services, configure the iptables firewall on your
system, use good passwords.  You should also keep good backups of your
data.  And consider running tripwire and chkrootkit to monitor for signs
of intrusion.
