If SuSE works, there is no BIOS problem, or else SuSE has a workaround
that can be made to work on Fedora.

I have a few machines of that vintage still working. One of them uses
a cheap PDC20265 card for the ide drives, but that is because the
motherboard eats cd drives for lunch.  Purchasing such a card may be
easier than hunting down the differences between distros.
