Upgrade to kernel 2.6.11 failure

"make install" adds an entry for the new kernel to /etc/grub.conf
so you don't need to add it yourself.
The fact that you did suggests that you compiled and installed
the kernel is some non-standard way:

        make
        make modules_install
        make install
