Heaven forbid!  No! Compiling the kernel is not required at all.

Simply have the latest version of the 2 packages (kernel and
kernel-devel) installed then compile the driver thru use of the command 
  sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7676-pkg1.run
That compiles and installs the latest nvidia driver to match the running
kernel (so you need to have already rebooted to the new kernel to do
that).
