Is there a recent Fedora Core x Live CD.
If not, is anyone working on it ?

Sounds a good case for logging in using a barcode scanner against the
student's library card. Gives you individual users, a simple logon
procedure, and something you can expand on over the years (more
computers, same students with same logons next year, etc.).

That is another simple option: One user per machine, but not one user
for all machines. It avoids two terminals trying to access the same
personal files at the same time, but doesn't get around the problem of
one user changing settings for the next user. But there are probably
some "internet cafe" options for wiping out all customisations and
starting a new, each logout and login cycle.

Possibly some integration between DHCP issued hostnames and usernames
derived from hostnames, for someone adventurous with scripting... But
if you just have four terminals, you may as well take the simple way out
and have user1, user2, user3 & user4 preconfigured as the autologon
users for each terminal. Diskless terminals can have different files
given to them as they bootup, they could share almost everything
(hardware configuration, etc.,) except for the files to do with
auto-logon.

Probably you want to look into some internet cafe solutions, there might
be something that suits you.

A remote access as root isn't the same as being root on that machine (if
you configure things in a safe manner). This may be a cause of your
problems.

Connect via SSH to the machine the drive is on, and operate on it
(almost) directly. Don't try and share out stuff as root, then try and
use them as root on a remote mount (it opens you up to a lot of
problems, not to mention that you're fighting against some common setup
options that don't allow it).

You would need to mount something in a particular way to enable more
access (though be warned, that's a very bad idea). Once mounted, you
wouldn't be able to change permissions to be more permissible than the
mount settings.

You should be able to get the latest kernel by just doing "yum update"
as long as you have another way to get on-line with the system (wire,
built-in wireless and ndiswrapper). If not, you may want to look into
pulling down the iso images for one of the unofficial FC4 updates that
are available.

Hi,

I'm running Core 3 on a Ferrari 3400 and when I display /proc/cpuinfo
it only shows 800MHz. Is it really only running at 800MHz or is this
some anomoly?

How can I get the processor to run at 2GHz?

Thanks,
Mark

I think you see 800MHz because the cpuspeed daemon is active and if the
laptop is idle it dynamically throttles down the cpu to save the
battery. Once you start something big like OpenOffice.org Writer than
you can see that it will jump up to 2GHz. There is a nice little gnome
app that sits in the taskbar and shows you at which speed the cpu runs.

OT: I have the Ferrari 4000. Have you by any chance been successful to
make the bluetooth and WiFi hard buttons on the front of the laptop to
work? If so, can you please tell me how you did it?

Regards,
Patrick

I don't think this is an operating system issue. Look into your BIOS.
Thats where you adjust CPU frequency !

Yes, you're right! Thanks for the help.

As for the buttons on the front, I have not played with those. I got
the WiFi working but nothing to do with the buttons.

Thanks again,
Mark

This recipe has appeared before:
1. boot linux rescue on you system (either form rescue disk or type :
linux rescue at the boot from CD 1.
2. You linux will be mounted on /mnt/sysimage
3. run: chroot /mnt/sysimage
4. If you have a valid /boot/grub/grub.conf then run: grub-install /dev/hda
(or /dev/hd? or /dev/sd? if more appropriate) That will reinstall boot
block.
5. reboot and remove CD.
and you should be back in business. At step 4 you can fix the
grub.conf if necessary.

In addition to what others have said tetrex-xdvi is on CD 2 of the FC4
set. But because of dependencies the yum way is better.

Hi all,

I just upgraded one of my older machines from FC2 to FC4, no major problems.

However, I noticed that using the middle button to paste selected text
fails only when the source (the selected text) is an Evolution compose
window. Other select/middle-button pastes work ok.

Has anyone run into this problem? Any suggestions as to a line of
debugging or a fix?

Thanks,
Mark

Installing Widows will probably overwrite the boot loader. Use linux
rescue to reinstall grub boot loader .

Hmm. Interesting. At least now I know that it's not my imagination or
pilot error.
The only reason I mentioned the upgrade was that this action was working on
FC2.

Mine shows up as a "Network Controller". Try this:

/sbin/lspci |grep Net

On my system, this shows my Intel wireless:

Your first install CD should have a rescue mode. See the instructions
after booting, but before hitting enter.

Thank you. I was able to update with this command:
yum --exclude=directfb --exclude=libtunepimp --exclude=dbus-qt update

This is the second time that Livna has caused problems in the past
month. Would it be wise to switch to Dag? I know how important his
repo is to him, he even once helped me fix a dependancy problem
personally. The only reason that I dont use his repo now is because I
dont want to break Extras.
