Well, problem solved, although I'm not quite sure how...

Got it up and running with the vesa driver in a low resolution, ran
system-config-display and selected a "Generic 1400x1050 LCD Display" and
presto. Also works with ATI's drivers now (tested the RPM's from Livna).
