ALSA, in recent versions, does software-mixing
automatically (similar to other operating systems such as Microsoft's
Windows). However, wxWidgets (which Audacity uses) still uses OSS/Free
instead of ALSA for its sound layer.

Thus, unless your sound card can do hardware mixing, you'll need to make
sure that nothing else is using the sound device (EsounD perhaps?).
