Booting in text mode

When grub shows your boot options, press "E" to edit the one you want to
use. Locate the line that loads the kernel and edit it, adding 
" 3" (without quotes) at the end of the line. Confirm the new line and
press "B" to boot in runlevel 3. This modification will affect this boot
only. Next time, it will boot in runlevel 5 again (or any other that is
set as default runlevel in your inittab).
