iso file from a cd

Hi,
I want to create an iso file of a CD in linux. The use of the command cat
/dev/cdrom > file.iso is not woriking nither I am able to mount the CD. It
is giving Input/Output error. But gnome-cd is able to play the cd. How
should I do this ?
