init 3 (from init 5) just hangs?

Try replacing the FC4.49.2 packages with the older FC4.45 packages and see
if that fixes your problem. If that fixes your problem you might visit this
bug report, https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=169238 ,
and add your input.
