It seems mplayer doesn't use 3d-hardware...

I have used mplayer with -vo gl2 as a fall back when it decides it won't 
work properly.

I would suspect it is more of a problem with the ATI card and driver.  I 
just tried mplayer and -vo gl2 option on an ATI 7500 with FC4.
