I solved my problem by setting the left-margin, right-margin, top-margin and bottom-margin options all to 0 via system-config-printer. After visiting all that CUPS documentation mentioned again, I found that I had failed to set the bottom-margin to 0. Oh well. Thanks to all who sent me their thoughts. -- brtaylor at sanfelipe.com.mx
