Compling kernel in FC4

Hi list,
I am trying to add new iptables modules, and keep my
custom kernel as close to FC4 stocked kernel as possible.

Googling show 2 types of guides, one suggest copying
sample .config from $SOURCE/configs as a base and
mod/patch from there.

Others did'nt even mention about those sample configs.

So is it still necessary to copy them? Or will rpmbuild
sort out the correct .config when I supplied the
'--target=' flag?
