gedit highlighting of c code.

I have 2 files, calculate.c and beforecalc.c. They have very similar
contents yet when I edit both one is nicely hightlighted with colors to
indicate strings, comments, etc. and the other is entirely black and white.
What must I do to turn on the formatting for the B&W file?
