Actually, what I would prefer is not to use that editor at all. But
I have so far been unable to associate my favorite editor with any
extensions. I've followed the help (which does not match the version
of Gnome), and I've followed the interactive links available with Gnome
(which do not actually add my editor to the list).

I have had no problem changing the default editor in recent Fedora
Cores:

* Browse to a directory containing source files using Nautilus
* Right click on a source file and choose properties
* Go to the open with tab and choose away

I did mention in my post that I had tried following the help
and the interactive links (which you just described) which
claim to be able to do that, and which fail.

You have found the bank of Larn.
I can explain it for you, but I can't understand it for you.
I speak only for myself, and I am unanimous in that!
