Might I suggest Aqua Data Studio?  (http://www.aquafold.com)  It is 
java-based, and if it used just for personal reasons, it is license-free.  I 
have used it for just the reasons you want.  They have connectors, via JDBC, 
to connect to quite a few data sources.
