It doesn't seem to confuse mutt.
Are you talking about "threads in the Gmail interface" (which is --
idiosyncratic), or "threads in a 'real' e-mail client, having downloaded
the e-mail with POP3? I can't see that they do anything to POP3 messages
that normal mail servers aren't allowed to do anyway...
