Run

   smartctl -A /dev/hda

and watch for things like Current_Pending_Sector and 
Offline_Uncorrectable.  Also, try

  smartctl -t long /dev/hda

followed by (after waiting the indicated period of time)

  smartctl -l selftest /dev/hda
