Timothy, I am a bit confused by the question, though it may reflect a 
GTK theme issue perhaps (presuming that you are using GNOME of course.)

I am not sure which buttons you are referring to other than the ones 
below the track controls on the Playback tab. When disabled/muted, there 
should be a red 'X' that appears over the little icon.  If there is no 
red "X", then perhaps the GTK theme that you are using has a different 
schema, where the red is muted.

If I am missing something, let me know.
