PC speaker does not speak

On the Thinkpad I have here, the POST 'beep' comes through the
sound card. If you have the volume set too low, you will not
hear it. Then again, it will also play audio CDs without
booting up the computer. So there is some type of hardware or
firmware defaults for the mixer.
