how to add another partition and make more room for /

hi,
I'm a newbie user so need steps.

I have 8 GB initially allocated for / which is almost
full.
My question is how to add another disk and partition
it and make room so that additional space count
towards /.
Can I just shift any system folder to the new
partition?
will it work as before?
