Could someone else have set it up earlier?  The caching-nameserver
package will wipe out local changes to named.conf when it updates.
For a few machines it is probably easier to make all the
necessary entries in each machine's /etc/hosts file.  Next
easiest would be to install webmin and use that to configure
a zone.
