system stops after logging out

Mine will restart the shutdown after I throw the mouse at the wall. 
My machine has also quit going into HiRes while booting, displaying the init stages in detail. I get nothing but a blank screen with the X cursor in the middle of it. Should I throw the mouse on the floor for boot, and the wall for shutdown?? Ric
