Since this I have rebooted,
done a mkfs on the drive to rebuild the file system,
mkfs -V -t ext3 -L "hdf" /dev/hdf1
followed by a fsck to check the file system.
fsck -V -p -c -c -f /dev/hdf1
none of which found an errors.
since then I have unmounted the file system so it is not used, but I get
the following errors
