The main problem seemed to be caused by the dpi setting of 94 dpi. I 
reduced the setting to 74 and am seeing fonts more to my taste. I also 
adjusted hinting to slight and checked subpixels since it was an LCD.

Thanks for the assistance. I was unaware that there were so many factors 
which influence the rendering of the fonts. I'm satisfied with both bug 
report diagnostics.
