microphone recording on audacity

Hi,
when i tried to record audio using a microphone with audacity, I aways get a
audio i/o error. I searched a bit and tries following:

rm ~/.audacity
use alsamixer to unmute mic
use volumn-control to unmute microphone input

but, it still nopt working. the mic was pluged properly. the system sound is
working. could someone offer advices?
