I may be able to help you get decent support and with Free Software
drivers by sharing my experience with an ATI X700 on a Fujitsu/Siemens
laptop I bought for my girlfriend.
Her Ubuntu installation didn't properly detect the video card, and she
correctly understood that she had to use the second option of
installation when she saw them again.
After that, I investigated, and the conclusion was: it was supported,
BUT this particular ID isn't/wasn't whitelisted.
According to lspci -vv:

But the attached xorg.conf provides beautiful 1280x800 and glxgears
shows about 1422 FPS (way better than my "fully" supported rv200 based
Radeon 7500 on the "fedora-based mythtv media center" desktop).
