problems with GStreamer after upgrade

I'm encountering a problem with GStreamer-related apps after doing a
FC4->FC5 upgrade.  None of the sound-related applications are giving any
sound.  The panel's volume control is disabled and invoking
gnome-volume-control gives the following error: "No volume control GStreamer
plugins and/or devices found."

The soundcard detection application works fine and I can hear the test
sounds.  Any ideas on what might be the issue here?
