FC 5 black screen before install

Five suggestions:

1) Assuming you can mount CD#1,
you could burn images/boot.iso to a CD
and see if you can boot that.
If you can, see if "linux askmethod" works.

2) You could try upgrading or installing from hard disk,
without using the CD drive at all,
by copying boot.iso to your FC-3 system,
opening it with "mount -o loop boot.iso /mnt",
copying the files to /boot
and adding a stanza to /etc/grub.conf to boot from that.

3) You could try upgrading to FC-4 first.

4) You could try upgrading entirely by yum,
after getting and installing fedora-release-5-5.noarch.rpm

5) You should try booting from your FC-3 disk,
in case something has gone wrong with the drive
(or the BIOS settings).
