My exact steps logged in as a normal user from a FC3 cli;

1.) su

2.) entered root's password

3.) gedit

The error message comes up but gnome editor functions as expected.

Well versed in vi here, been using it since SCO Open Server 5.0.4.
Personally, any file I edit gets scpd' to a FreeBSD server, edited with
mc (Midnight Commander) & scpd' back. BTW, why not run gedit as root?
