vncserver for starting the server and vncviewer for starting the client
provide a much more friendly UI. Check the man pages for both commands
for all the gory details but something like:

vncserver -geometry 1280x1024 -depth 24

and

vncviewer -geometry 1280x1024 -FullColor MyVNCbox:1

Work to start the server and then access it from a remote system. If
you want your full, pretty desktop to be available, you'll need to edit
~/.vnc/xstartup to look something like:

#!/bin/sh

# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
# xsetroot -solid grey
# vncconfig -iconic &
# xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
gnome-session

VNC uses port 590x (where x is the desktop number) In the above example
it would be 1 so you'd need to open port 5901 if there's a firewall
between the server and the client.

Cheers,
Dave
