can't play avi file

I run Fedora Core 3.

I want to watch an avi file.
$ file 2005-SS-FP.V01.2005-04-12.HDV_low.avi
2005-SS-FP.V01.2005-04-12.HDV_low.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI,

I installed:

vlc fails with the following:
$ vlc 2005-SS-FP.V01.2005-04-12.HDV_low.avi

it appears I am stuck.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than upgrading to FC 6?
